Why Join DVHS Robotics?

Whether you're a beginner or an expert, you'll be able to:
  • Design and build a robot to accomplish a task
  • Work effectively in a team
  • Work with parts to build complex machines
  • Complete work that involves mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, programming, and public relations
  • Give back to other members and the community by volunteering and teaching
  • Have a fun time - it's a great experience!

Where Should I Start?

Our club is split into two parts: novice and competitive. Learn more about each one below:
Novice:
In the novice program, members are divided into novice teams - small, beginner teams that build and compete against each other with simpler robots. Novice members spend the first semester of the school year learning about the VEX platform. The second semester is spent on a working competition robot that members can design, build, program, and drive with guidance from the competitive team members. Throughout the year, novice members interact with veteran club members who will work with and mentor teams.
  • Through lessons and hands-on projects, novice members will be able to learn about the various components of a robot, such as drive trains, lifts, and object manipulators.
  • Every novice member will have access to a starter kit, with more parts available as the year progresses.
  • Novice members will be taught lessons about mechanics, programming, and designing robots.
  • Approximately 3-4 hours/week
Competitive:
The Robotics Club currently competes in tournaments organized by VEX Robotics and constructs robots with VEX parts to compete in games designed by VEX. A new game is put out annually and a new robot must be built every season. We go to multiple local tournaments throughout the year and, in addition, have qualified/competed many times in the California State Championships and the VEX Worlds Championship.
  • New competitive members will join a competitive team and work on a large robot with their team members.
  • Students in a competitive team will work with veteran members of varying experience levels in teams of, on average, 12 people.
  • Team members must be able to attend tournaments every month on Saturdays.
  • Approximately 8-10 hours/week, including weekends
